Santa Cruz Island Adventure - Friday, June 23, 2017 – 7:00 a.m.

$55/person – 10 person minimum/30 maximum

Get ready for an unforgettable journey to the Channel Islands National Park. Santa Cruz, the largest of all the Channel Islands, offers many opportunities for self-exploration and discovery. The channel crossing takes about one hour (a little longer when marine life is encountered along the way). Scorpion Anchorage offers varied hiking trails, from casual strolls to challenges for the avid hiker. A Cavern Point Trail guided hike by a volunteer National Park naturalist is offered without charge on most day trips.  There are vault-style restrooms, tree-shaded picnic tables and potable drinking water available at Scorpion Anchorage. You can kayak, swim or snorkel through shoreline kelp forests (see options below) or just relax on the cobblestone beach.

There is plenty to discover, beginning with a visit to the island visitors center located at historic Scorpion Ranch. Panel displays, exhibits and a topographic relief map describe the vast bio-diversity and rich cultural history of Santa Cruz Island.

You can pick up a trail map and explore on your own along the island’s many trails or join the naturalist-led hike mentioned above. If fortunate, you may encounter one of the island’s endemic creatures like the Santa Cruz Island Scrub Jay or Island Fox along the way. These creatures and many endemic plants are found nowhere else in the world!

What to bring for the best island experience:

Pack food and drink for your time on the island.  A small cooler with a single handle or a back pack will help to protect your food from the small animals and birds that populate the island year round.  There are no shops or restaurants on the island.

Come prepared to hike out all your trash.

Sunscreen and a hat will help to protect you from UV that is present even on overcast days.

Weather conditions can change rapidly in the Santa Barbara Channel.  It is always best to dress in layers and bring a jacket along (even in the summer months).

Flat shoes with rubber soles are best for both the boat and the island. Hiking shoes are recommended. Do not wear loose or leather soled sandals, nor flip-flops, on your island adventure.

Bring your camera and binoculars. The island offers spectacular photo opportunities.

Participants MUST arrive at the departure point in Ventura Harbor by 7:15 a.m. latest or risk missing the boat—which will NOT be held for you. You can expect to return to Ventura at about 5:30 p.m. PLEASE NOTE:The registration fee for this activity is non-refundable. Landing at the island, unless prevented by weather or sea conditions, is at a pier and involves climbing a ladder between 1 and 6 rungs.

The following are options you may wish to arrange on your own in conjunction with your island adventure:

Interested in skin-diving while at Santa Cruz? Ventura Dive & Sport ( rents all the gear you’ll need and will deliver it to the Island Packers dock in advance of your trip.

How about kayaking?  Scorpion Anchorage falls within Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary as well as a state Marine Protected Area. No other area of the park offers as many sea cave kayaking opportunities. Some of the most beautiful sea caves in the world can be found at Scorpion Anchorage.Guided kayaking tours are available through Channel Islands Kayaking Adventures( and include a basic paddling instruction/safety talk and all necessary gear. You return to the beach around 1:30 p.m., leaving time for lunch, hiking, or whatever you choose to do before your return to Ventura.

Strawberry Shortcake (on the drive of the same name) - Friday, June 23, 2017 – 1:45 p.m.

Do you remember REAL strawberry shortcake? We’re talking about the kind our great grandmothers made before the days of packaged grocery cakes. This real-deal shortcake is so fresh and delicious that you can close your eyes and smell it baking. Topped with fresh, juicy Ventura County strawberries--so good, they’re shipped all over the world--and real whipped cream. It’s a treat you won’t want to miss. Big enough to share if you can actually part with half of it, but it’s so good that we recommend getting your own.
